The greatest classic film soundtracks

Here is our selection of some of the greatest soundtracks in cinema history.

Psycho (1959)

Composer Bernard Herrmann produced some cutting-edge work for Psycho, with the film’s iconic shrieking strings which has become internationally recognisable as the quintessential sound of terror.

As Hitchcock stated, '33 per cent of the effect of Psycho was due to the music', and Herrmann was able to strip away all but the stringed instruments to create a monochrome wall of aural nervousness.

A Clockwork Orange (1971)

Wendy Carlos was enlisted by Kubrick to provide a futuristic accompaniment for the film, a story adapted from Anthony Burgess' novel about tearaway teens. The soundtrack was era-defining and turned a generation of young rebels into twisted music historians.

Trainspotting (1996)

This film redefined modern British cinema, leaving an impression upon contemporary youth culture. Songs included Iggy Pop's 'Lust For Life', Lou Reed's 'Perfect Day', and even Underworld's heartbeat 'Born Slippy'.

Blade Runner (1982)

Much of the appeal of this soundtrack comes down to the score by Greek composer Vangelis, as it provides the perfect backdrop to the film’s enigmatic and eye-popping visuals.
